The Volkswagen FSI engine uses in-cylinder direct injection technology, which subverts the tradition of mixing oil and gas into the engine for combustion. It can inject fuel directly into the engine cylinder as needed and can achieve stratified injection.

The Volkswagen 1.8-liter TSI engine, which is produced and sold domestically, does not have a stratified injection function, but is a typical in-cylinder direct injection. The FSI engine without stratified injection retains the “uniform injection” mode of operation, which means that the engine performs uniform injection in the cylinder regardless of low or high load conditions.

In fact, stratified injection is actually an engine lean-burning technology. At low load, the Volkswagen FSI engine is half-open, and the fuel system injects fuel into the engine's compression stroke. The special piston top design creates a tumble of the inhaled air and the injected fuel, forming a theoretical space only around the spark plug. The fuel-burning air-fuel mixture is sufficient to ignite the mixture in the entire combustion chamber; and elsewhere in the combustion chamber is a thin mixture of air-rich gas to form a lean combustion.

However, the Volkswagen 1.8-liter TSI engine produced and sold domestically does not have a stratified injection function, but a typical in-cylinder direct injection. The FSI engine without stratified injection retains the “uniform injection” mode of operation, which means that the engine will perform uniform injection in the cylinder regardless of low load or high load conditions, but the injection quantity is still accurate according to the intake air volume. However, due to the lack of stratified injection function, the fuel consumption of the domestic version of the FSI engine during operation will be higher than that of the engine with this function.
