Nissan will produce a new generation of EV batteries in the UK

Nissan announced on January 21, 2016 that it will produce next-generation batteries for pure electric vehicles (EVs) at the Sunderland plant, the main production base in the United Kingdom. The Sunderland plant will invest 26.5 million pounds to recruit 300 workers.

The new-generation battery development project will invest 19,400,000 pounds, developed by Nissan and the UK's industry-university cooperation alliance. Among them, the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) has decided to invest 9.7 million pounds in this development project.

The industrial-academic cooperation alliance includes British Hyperdrive Innovation, which is engaged in the development and production of battery systems, University of Warwick, and research institutions under the umbrella of Warwick University, School of Manufacturing Engineering of Warwick University, Newcastle University and Zero Carbon Futures.

The Sunderland plant will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. Nissan started producing EVs at the Sunderland plant from 2013. In the past, a total of 420 million pounds was invested in the production of EVs. Through the production of EV "LEAF" and its batteries, the plant and its suppliers have provided 2,000 jobs.

Nissan has three battery production facilities in the world. The Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom is one of them. The battery module produced by the plant is equipped with the EV SUV "eNV200" produced at the Barcelona plant in Spain. (Reporter: Shibuya Shajiangzi)
