British wave center project for the first time to generate electricity

The wave center, which is located in Corrwall on the West Coast of the United Kingdom, completed a full test this week and was officially put into use.

The Wave Center, which costs 42 million pounds, is a giant ocean wave energy converter similar to a four-socket outlet. To better capture Atlantic wave energy, the device is installed 50 meters below the seabed 16 kilometers offshore. Because the four transformers can work at the same time, the effect of the “wave center” is comparable to multiple wave generators, and this device has created the pilot of “the world’s largest” wave energy technology. (£1 is about 10.83 RMB)

The power generated by the wave center is transported ashore via a 33 kV transmission cable and then integrated into the power grid through a new substation.

Guy Lavender, general manager of the project, said at the UK Renewable Energy Annual Meeting on November 3 that the "Wave Center" equipment passed comprehensive tests. He said: "In the installation process, we have conducted continuous testing of the entire system. I am very glad that there were no obstacles to the first generation and the grid connection. (Currently) the system has been continuously generating electricity and is under monitoring."

With the installation of the last 177 cement "mattresses" placed on the cable, the "wave center" project will end this week. This layer of cement “mattress” will cover 91,000 tons of rock on a 25-kilometer long cable that is regularly spaced to ensure the safety of the cable. Next week the project team will install a buoy to mark the location of the wave center.

The project was initiated by the British Southwestern Agency for Economic Development (RDA), but according to the British government’s reform plan, the agency will be revoked in 2012. Lavender said: "Even if the British Southwestern Economic Development Agency does not exist by 2012, there is no doubt that the wave center will continue to operate. We will continue to look for commercial customers to provide full financial support."

The first customer of the wave center is Ocean Power Technologies, which will use electric buoy systems to convert wave kinetic energy into electricity.
